Session 3

Colour in the person you are feeling like

At the heart of the curriculum cycle is the learner constructing meaning

How do the elements interact?

The programme of inquiry and the subject scope and sequences are components of the curriculum, which when used together, define a coherent curriculum
    • Find the planner in MtPYPH 2009
    • Planner on MyIB
    • Enhanced IB PYP 2018/19
    • Planning through the above structure to unpack

What should be our Transdisciplinary Theme?

    Our Central Idea
Developing our personal knowledge and understanding of the essential elements of the programme, deepens our understanding of international mindedness and the learner profile; preparing us for planning, teaching and assessing students; and develops our skills to analyse and refine the school's programme of inquiry.

Assessment is integral to planning, teaching and learning, and needs to be varied and purposeful

Activity - Design a Summative assessment task for Day 3
    • What are some of the factors we need to think about when designing assessments?
    Reading activity:

    What are our concepts?

    • Identify which of the PYP concepts are within our workshop central idea

Add to Wonderwall - Gathering student questions along the way

How does this fit within a Programme of Inquiry?

The PYP curriculum is concept-driven and transdisciplinary

    What at lines of inquiry?

    • Go back to MtPYPH document - What are Lines of Inquiry?
    • A way of proving the central idea to be correct (or not)
    • The central idea broken down into sentences that will drive students though their inquiry
Why are they statements not questions?

      1. I enjoyed this session, I am an auditory learner so got a lot out of being given some information and a task to do - much needed PD on the planner. It was also very handy to have the specific parts of the 'MtPYPH' booklet pointed out to me as it is a large document that is daunting to navigate without purpose. I would prefer to have a 'sense of ownership' over a place in the room rather than moving around to meet new people and change tables.

      2. I found it useful to talk through the planner from scratch as I had never seen a blank unit planner until today. Being shown the bubble planner example in the PYP book was helpful also. I liked Wiggins & Tighe's 'backwards by design' model.

      4. The bubble planner - Was great as a guide to completing the plan, instructions are clear and will allow me to contribute more on our next planning day.

      5. I like the idea of backward design approach to planning. It is good to what I have already done in practise supported by academic theory. For How We Express Ourselves unit, I planned the unit from the end product; an assembly performance about how students can express who they are. From there, I gave opportunity for students to acquire the necessary skills and knowledge to reach their summative assessment.
