Assessment is integral to planning, teaching and learning, and needs to be varied and purposeful
Box 3 on the planner assists teachers and students to formatively assess each line of inquiry, the elements predetermined through the backward by design mapping
Interplay between box 3 and 4 as the inquiry progresses

Some interesting points to think about and it has been useful to have a closer look at the 'Making the PYP Happen' document. Perhaps the pace could be upped a little.
ReplyDeleteInspiring! Having only just begun my journey into IB, I have taken on the 'new learner' hat. Today has helped me begin to fit the pieces of the puzzle together.
ReplyDeleteI like going through the planner process

ReplyDeleteToday was a wonderful opportunity to meet new people who are also familiarising themselves with the PYP. In particular, unpacking what action looks like was very interesting. I enjoyed the experience of becoming more familiar with the different concepts and applying them to real world contexts. All in all, very interesting and I am looking forward to going into further detail tomorrow. Food was good too!!!
ReplyDeleteThe provocation video of the young girl reminding us to learn from the children stuck with me. It, along with the pizza activity, reminded me of some of the reasons I got into teaching and I am excited to bring that back to my teaching next week as we get back into our unit of inquiry.
ReplyDeleteThank you to Alison and Heather for a great first day.
ReplyDeleteIt was great to interact with new people who have been exploring the Primary Years Programme in their school, sharing ideas and gaining knowledge from their experience.
Learning about the essential elements and how to make them visible in planning was the part that interest me the most.
Looking forward to another fun filled learning day tomorrow.
It was great to meet lots of people who are in the same boat as me... still learning, still trying to understand and still making sense of this whole PYP! It was also interesting to see that I actually know more than I thought.

ReplyDeleteIt was interesting sharing how other teachers have seen 'action'. I have enjoyed networking and meeting new people and hearing about their experiences.
ReplyDeleteIn short, these are my three top "what I have observed/learned" today:
ReplyDelete* We all have different styles of learning and interpretation of what we learn.
* Jargon plays a huge role in understanding new concepts.
* Though the framework guides what we are to teach, the understanding and translation of this - from school to school - is different, showing that the IB curriculum is quite broad and not the same in its execution.
I enjoyed understanding the importance of the 5 essential elements of skills, attitudes, knowledge, concepts and action and how they relate to each other.
ReplyDeleteI have a greater understanding of how to use the hand outline to describe the essential elements. I had used this previously but now I understand how valuable it can be.
ReplyDeleteI have found it valuable discussing how to use the Bubble planner and the planner with my team mate which will be exceptionally useful back at school in our team.
I would like to ask that we shorten our breaks to be shorter to be able to end the day earlier to avoid the horrible traffic and make it home to our families earlier.
Going through the planner was a useful and practical activity. I agree that perhaps the pace could be upped as well.
ReplyDeleteI have gained a better understanding of concepts today :)
ReplyDeleteToday was useful of clarifying the PYP planner and how it can be adapted to suit various levels. Engaging with others around the table was really informative and an awesome way to discuss different ideas, approaches and issues that as 'newbies' to IB. I particularly enjoy the self-reflective aspect of identifying who and why we teach / behave the way we do, and how that transfers into our practice. Looking at the enormity of the document and how it fits together. I am interested in how the inquiry process can be integrated across all areas of the NZC effectively or efficiently. Does everything need to be inquired about? Im not sure.
